HISTORY:
We
started with a herding dog mix of Border Collie, Kelpie and a Heeler. Our goal was to have an ultimate farm dog at the time, but finding
that the English Shepherd by far had the BEST personalities and manners of the
other 3 breeds we topped it off adding the English Shepherd and the result far
exceeded our expectations. Not only did we get a smart wanting to work dog
that was not a hyper go go go type but we also had the perfect family dog that
gets along with any age of child. This was not one of those overnight
hybrid crosses (like our Cockapoo that is a two dog mix... mind you we LOVE our
Cockapoos also!) it took a couple of generations to get here. With
observations of what people were looking for locally in a dog from farmers and
families, we came up with our Dakotah Shepherd. Selling locally first for
the past year and a half, word got around slowly on our puppies and the calls
came in, we couldn't keep up with the requests. We are currently adding
non-related additional lines.
ABOUT THE BREED:
The
best of the best (personality-wise) was used to create this beautiful, intelligent new breed. Very flexible training...
herding, agility, therapy.
Usually black & tan or shades of Sable, other colors may be available in the
future. Many have blazes and white feet. Haircuts not required, they have short
to medium coats. Seasonal shedding, mostly in the Spring and during hot
temperatures. This dog is as comfortable in the backyard as it is on the farm.
More than willing to go out and work or just play with the family.
Satisfied to be just in the company of their family, they will not terrorize
your house while you are away, they have lots of patience (I know of breeds that
will almost "eat" thru walls if they get bored they want to work). Hybrid Vigor!
Lots of time has gone into this wonderful breed, though only pets
are available now we hope to have breeder's available in 2007, our breeders are out of registered parentage for traceable lines.
You will not find this breed anywhere else at this time. Herding dogs are
smart and sensitive, they can on occasion be timid and shy as puppies but often
outgrow it. Mind you, if this breed, like any other breed, is left
unattended, alone for long periods of time, little contact with people, like any
other herding dog, they will stay timid. They do require daily "love".
-
Very gentle,
very patient, great with kids!
-
EXTREMELY smart, easy to train with enough flexibility to be good at
herding, agility, a loving therapy dog, or just a family pet.
-
Averaging around 35-50 pounds, 17" - 21" in height.
-
Will warn you of
strangers and may hold the stranger at bay until you say its ok. But
does not have an aggressive behavior.
-
High level of
obedience, not the type to run off, they are very loyal to their family.
-
Generally good
with other pets and dogs.
-
They are not hyper dogs nor are they yappy/barky, generally a very quiet
dog.
-
The perfect companion.

A Response from your ad on Dog Breed Info
Sender's name: Linda K
Sender's message: (referring to Bear in the next section)
I currently help out at a boarding kennel in Texas. Today, I got to see
my first Dakotah Shepherd which was unheard of until today. What a
delightful dog. The veterinarians have labeled the dog a GSD cross. When
I saw it, I knew that was no GSD. The owners were quite firm as to the
dog's breed. Now I know.
If I were younger and in better health, I would love to own one. Up
until a few weeks ago, I was taking herding lessons with my Border
Collie, Corrie. I was having fun, but Corrie was not. So, we will do
obedience and agility which she enjoys more.
I have a fondness for herding breeds. I have had Cardigan Corgis and
still have one, a sweet girl, Bria.
Good luck with the breed. Hope to see it at Westminster someday.

Hi Michelle,
Sorry I haven't been in contact with you. It has been a very hectic
year. We finally got moved from El Paso and are now settled in at our
new home in Harker Heights, Texas which is near Fort Hood. Fort Hood is
in hill country about 1 hour north of Austin. The puppy we got from you
last November (the kids named here Bear because she looked like a little
black bear cub when she came waddling out of her crate after we picked
her up from the airport) has grown into a wonderful member of our
family. She is the sweetest dog and just wants to please us all the
time. We love her to pieces.
I did have her spayed back in February and know you need to have that
info. Do you want me to send a copy through the mail or e-mail a
scanned in copy? And what paperwork do you need? Will a copy of the
vet receipt do?
I've also included a couple of pictures of Bear. Isn't she
beautiful?
Thank you for everything. Bear topped out at 53 lbs. :)

Living a new life on a dude ranch in Wyoming, one
of our pups has made himself at home. This little fella lives with
horses, cattle, sheep, goats and cats. And because its a dude
ranch is in constant contact with strangers. |
|
Another of our puppies... one now lives in North Dakota
in a city with a very young couple with young children... last we heard
they had their puppy spoiled and had learned to sit, stay by the age of
4 months old. |
|

Pony, a female owned by Craig in South Dakota lives on a
large ranch. Craig has 3 children from 1 year old and up (grade
school age). She runs free in the yard and never has run off, she
is Tad's full sister. She is learning the ropes of cattle herding
and lives with lots of little baby kitties and cats. The cats are
her family and she treats them as if they are her pups. Mindful of
what Craig is doing out in the barns, I have not heard of her getting in
the way but rather wanting to learn and work. Very attentive.
(Pony loves people, it was hard to get a pic of her away from the
camera) :) Current report is all of a sudden Pony "got it"
and is a very smart working cattle dog and doing well, it took her 1 day
to actually figure it out, her training is continuing. |

Tad,
owned by Beth and Evan (Beth's teen son) in South Dakota. Living
in a suburban, Beth has a very nice home with an average (size) nice
yard. Tad is very content living in town with a grumpy older dog
named Buddy who on some occasions loves to have his own space and
privacy. Tad is smart enough to allow Buddy his space when Buddy
requests it. He will go out in the front yard with Beth, with no
fence and mind what she is telling him and doing. Completely house
trained within weeks of his arrival to their home as a puppy.
Update 3-1-07 I went to visit Tad this past weekend
and Beth had to show me what he had learned. He has 3 toys.. a
rope, a rubber toy and a ball. She told Tad to sit and on the
other end of the kitchen she lined up his 3 toys, went and sat down at
the dining room table. She looked at Tad and said "go get me the
rope", Tad ran over and picked it up and put it on her lap. She
said "go get me the toy", he ran over picked it up and put that in her
lap. "Go get me the ball" she says and he did the same. You
can lay the toys down anywhere and tell him go get.... and he'll get it
every time! He is a VERY smart boy! I'll try and get video
next time I get to see him. |

"Here are a couple pictures of Shep I
just took. He is very loveable. We both care for him alot. Haven't
worked with the cattle yet, but will try that soon. Great disposition.
Very relaxed dog." ~ Kalberer |
......We
took her home and gave her a bath. She curled up on my husband and
that was all she wrote. Thank you so much for everything.....As you
can see Keegan our 3 year old is in love. Those two are
inseparable....

Michelle, Just thought I'd send you a note
to let you know that Addison is doing great. As you can see,
Our 3 year old and her have started their own soccer team. I'm
amazed at how smart she is... She's already going to the back
door and barking or whinning to go out..... Anyway... Thanks for
everything again... I'll be sending a pic of all the kids and
her soon..... We took them all in for a formal portrait.....
it's too cute...
Michelle,
Well, here's Addy at a year old.... She is the
most loving dog. As you can see she still loves playing soccer
with the kids... We get compliments on what a beautiful dog she
is every time we go somewhere.... Just wanted to drop you a few
pics and a note of thanks... She is a special part of our
family...

Michelle, Lou arrived safe and sound last
Tuesday. He's settled in nicely and doing very well. Our vet
said that he is a very healthy boy and praised you for being a
consiencious breeder and treating your animals well.
Our daughter has fallen in love with him
(attached picture), they play a lot which
helps with both the puppy and toddler energy!
Thanks again, should you ever need a reference
please keep us in mind.
You
certainly can use the picture on your site.
He's a sweet little boy. It's funny how he's adapted differently to
each of us. He's very playful but careful with Ryleigh, cuddly with
me and just all out puppy with John.
Don't be surprised if you find us on your waiting list in a year or
so. Great Lakes was very nice to deal with as well in the situation.
---------------------------------------
Hi
Michelle, Just wanted to let you know that at
5-month old, Lou doing great!!! We had a PetSafe
Underground fence installed and it took him ONE
trip around the yard to understand it. He loves being able
to run and chase his ball now.
He's also quite the water-dog which surprised
me. He jumps right in the pool with our daughter and runs
through the sprinkler (an not so great part is that he walks
in the shower w/ you and will get in the bathtub if you let
him). We also chases bubbles and jumps up to bite them.
You can probably tell that he has us all
wrapped around his paw pretty tightly....
We've mastered sitting, laying down and
coming when called. Still working on 'no jump' and stay but
he's a pretty quick study.

Hello- She did amazingly well in the car! Once she
got used to us, she slept almost the entire way. I did forget how
much work puppies are, though! This is the first time she's let me
get on the computer since I've been home!
I'll let you know how she's doing! So far she's
doing tremendously!
Thanks for everything-
Cassandra
Hi Michelle-
I saw the great pictures of Sasha's littermates,
so I thought I'd send a couple of her. She's so amazing- I thank
God every day that I'm lucky enough to have her in my life.
She's everything the website said she would be and much, much
more. She's doing absolutely fantastically- and has captured the
hearts of all my family and friends (there is no shortage of
love for this dog-that's for sure!!). Thank you so much for
creating such a fabulous breed! I will most definitely be
contacting you again for a partner in crime for Sasha!
Thanks again-

Hi
Michelle –
Love all the pictures of Charlie’s siblings.
Here’s a few of Charlie. You can post the one’s you want. I’m
going to try sending you a couple movie files in a separate email,
hopefully you can receive them, one of them is pretty good size.
Charlie is doing great. He is SUPER smart. We had him completely
potty trained in about 3 weeks. He’s very happy and has plenty of
room to roam in his fenced in yard. He and our kids are best buds
and they all have lots of energy to burn. He LOVES playing fetch
and can
already catch a Frisbee and tennis ball like a pro. Take care.
P.S. We had Charlie fixed a month ago. I just need to send you the
paperwork. I’ll try and do that soon.

Hi
Michelle, It’s the Hullsiek Family, just wanted to tell you
Cody’s doing just fine. He is very sweet and getting along just fine
with our family. Cody loves that brown blanket you gave us, he
didn’t get sick at all on the way home to M***. He likes the cat,
but I’m not sure the cat loves him. Cody’s met all the neighbors and
all the kids especially love him. We’re still working on
housebreaking and it’s going well, we can tell he is very smart. We
installed a zip line (or a runner) in the backyard. Cody is doing
just great. Sincerely,
The
Hullsiek Family
