American Cocker Spaniel - Small Purebred

Bold and keen to work, the American Cocker Spaniel is equally suited to life as a gundog or as a household pet. Cheerful, sweet, and sensitive. The Cocker Spaniel is respectful of its master's authority without much challenge. Merry and endearing. A happy tail-wagger. Gentle and trusting, with average intelligence. They are lively, playful and devoted, but should be socialized well when they are young to avoid a tendency for shyness. Usually good with children. Cockers love everyone and need people to be happy. They can be difficult to housebreak and some like to bark. However they are mostly easy to train and get along well with other animals. Note: This is a very popular breed; the above is the typical temperament of the American Cocker Spaniel, like any breed there are always exceptions. Due to this breeds popularity one must be careful to choose a Cocker from a reputable breeder; as some have reported in to the Dog Breed Info Center® reports of Cockers that have not had great temperaments and were not good with children. Cockers with this type of temperament are not typical of the breed. This would include shy-sharpness, which is a combination of fear and dominance that can cause viciousness. Also Submissive urinating; aggressive guarding of objects, people and places, hyper-sexuality and roaming.  Live 12-15 years.

All of our Cocker Spaniels have super personalities, they are family pets.  None have ever nipped, bit, or showed any aggression to a human being of any age.  They do not roam while out playing in the yard and do not aggressive guard objects from people, they are all very well behaved... they get along in the house as well as outdoors.  Are content, friendly, happy, smart.  Any age of person can go and play with any of our dogs and we never have to worry they all play and mind very well.  Docked Tails.

Health Issues: Some major concern in American Cocker Spaniels are cataracts, glaucoma and patellar luxation. Some minor concerns are hip dysplasia, ectropion, entropion, PRA, allergies, seborrhea, lip fold pyoderma, otitis externa, liver disease, urolithiasis, prolapse of nictitans gland, CHF, phosphofructokinase deficiency, and cardiomyopathy. Occasionally seen are gastric torsion and elbow dysplasia.

The basic American Cocker colors are:

  • Apricot (similar to cream but the highlights will have definite reddish cast).
  • Black
  • Buff -light cream, honey, golden, tan, beige, auburn - any shade of tan
  • Chocolate -can vary from light to dark; this can also include sable - a chocolate factor - base of light to dark chocolate with tipping and shading in black
  • Cream - basically a light color close to white but with cream highlights on ears and back
  • Red -overlaps to buff depending opinion but does have a noticeable red tint to a full deep Irish setter red rust tone
  • Silver is a phenomenon of being a mix of breed genetics - not a true solid color but may be patches of light to dark silver with considerable black; it can vary from patches to spots and generally changes as the puppy matures so it can only be said that there is a silver inclusion to some extent.
  • White

Markings are based strongly from the Cocker Spaniel, certain color marking patterns can be found being carried on to the cockapoo.

Parti color - any of above colors showing in patches on a white base - - ears are usually colored. May develop spots, freckles, etc on muzzle, legs, etc to go with patches.

Tri - any parti with tan markings

Phantom -  markings in white, silver, tan, red, or brown on a background of black or brown; the markings are spots over eyes, on the sides of the cheeks, symmetrical spots on chest, under tail, inside ears and on lower legs

Roan - a white base coat with many freckles and spots (rather than patches)

About Merle Cocker Spaniels
Merle is a very rare, flashy and unusual color found in American Cocker Spaniels. Merles may also have blue eyes, one blue eye, or part blue eyes. Sometimes they do not have blue eyes at all. It is the only color found in Cocker Spaniels that may have blue eyes.

A Merle Cocker may be bred to any color except for another Merle. A merle to merle breeding in any breed may cause a double dilute merle, causing many health problems. Such as stillborn puppies, puppies dying shortly after death, blind or deaf puppies, or even puppies born with no eyes at all! Among many other problems... Merle to merle breedings should never be done!
